About Us

We are a Freegan Cooperative.

FoodCommune is based in the practice and philosophy of FREEGANISM: i.e., how we GET our food, viz, we salvage food that would otherwise end up in a landfill.

What to expect?

1) What kinds of food will you get?

All the kinds of food that you get at any grocery store!

Fresh produce (fruits and vegetables), meats, meals, pantry items (cans, mac and cheese, etc.), salads, dairy (milk, yogurt, cheese), breads, desserts, and more. Plus a variety of health supplements.

You will NOT be getting a prepackaged box of food. Rather, you will be selecting the food items that you want from the offerings that day: Put 1 unit of food per plastic grocery bag, 5 units per crate maximum.

2) What will you pay for the food that you select?

The food at FoodCommune is affordable, because it is deeply discounted from retail prices! Yaaaay! You will pay 50-90% less at FoodCommune than you would pay at mainstream grocery stores.

The pricing structure at FoodCommune is: You pay $10 per crate, with each crate containing up to 5 "units" of food that you have selected.

A "unit" is an amount of food that would cost $4-10 retail, but you will pay only $2 for this "unit" of food at FoodCommune. You will see cardboard "Qty" signs positioned throughout the event. Eg, "Qty 4" on the cantaloupes means that 4 cantaloupes constitute 1 unit = $2, "Qty 8" on the tomatoes means that 8 tomatoes constitute 1 unit = $2. You can mix and match: For example, put 2 cantaloupes + 4 tomatoes into  bag to create 1 unit = $2. Please do NOT tie bags. Put up to 5 units = 5 bags in each crate, and pay $10 for the entire crate of food.

Donors, Shoppers, and Volunteers

FOOD DONATIONS WELCOME:

If you know of a business (restaurant, store, caterer, film company, etc.) that has excess food that they need to get rid of, please encourage them to donate this food to us, so that we can divert it to people who would use and appreciate it. Donate, don’t dump!

SHOPPERS AND VOLUNTEERS:

We are NOT externally funded. Instead, we are entirely self-sustaining. Thus, we depend not only on our FOOD DONORS, but on two key groups of people for the conscientious repurposing of this donated food:

1) We depend on our SHOPPERS (PAYING MEMBERS) each week to help cover some of our operating costs: the costs of getting all this food gathered, sorted, loaded, transported, stored, chilled, etc. Members pay $10 for each crate of food (up to 5 units of food per crate).

2) We depend on our VOLUNTEERS each Saturday distribution to get the food unloaded, fully sorted, arranged, and bagged so that its presentation makes for a convenient and pleasant shopping experience for all attendees.
